What I Would Place In A Time Capsule As the turn of the millennium approaches, the human race will continue to develop new technology and new ways of thinking. It is always enjoyable to take a visual journey back in time, to view what was considered advanced and what thoughts of future times represented. A time capsule stored with precious documents and possessions from a past era can serve as a visual and material presentation of what past times were like, and put in prospective the accomplishments that have changed human lifestyles for better or worse.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  If I were invited to participate in the planning of a time-capsule, I would include items that depicted the present society's mood and pastimes. I would include a compilation of the most popular and the most controversial music of the present era, and some background information on the songs and artists. My Location

My favorite location would have to be the Seawall In Sundae Okinawa, Japan. The Seawall can impact all your senses if you let it. This location impacts a few of my senses, sight, sound, and smell. It is basically a wall 2 and half miles in length, and about 7 minutes away from the base, It gets better, right there In scenic view next to the ocean. How it impacts my sight is that it's an awesome dive spot especially those who are beginners at diving.Once you suit up with the various gears for scuba diving, the wet suit, goggles, buoyancy control device, regulator, compass and alarm anus, you submerge in the blue water of the sea of the wall. Visibility under the water can get to 30 to 50 feet on a clear day and sometimes it depends on the weather and tide prior to the day you dive. I remembered my first dive as If It was yesterday; during my certification I saw the various wild life animals at 60 feet under sea water (SF).The wild life includes, bright colored coral, which was a mixtu re of mostly red, yellow, green, and pink. Sea creatures like octopus and squid that comes out only at night, you can also see crabs, tapeworms, and tropical fish. Looking at all his and feeling weightless at 60 feet under water is a very relaxing feeling one would have to experience. After a dive heading back up the steps of the Seawall your sense of smell is awaken to the delicious smell of Japanese cuisine coming from the restaurants.My stomach would immediately start to grumble, the aroma of the favorable Japanese food would distract me, and cravings would begin for tertiary foods that you wouldn't even have time to change from your wet suit. Your eyes and stomach promptly lead you to the nearest restaurants for an afternoon cuisine. Either sitting on the Seawall or sitting from one of the restaurants and enjoying the sound of the ocean, the waves crashing against the wall can be used as a good stress reliever.When I'm trying to cope with stress at the end of the day will go sit on this wall and hearing the sound of the ocean puts my mind at ease. As if I close my eyes I think I'm on vacation, I can dream, can't I? The Seawall in Sundae is a main attraction, sometimes I wish I had one of the apartments Just a stone throw away from it. The Seawall can stimulate all the senses if you let It. I see people Jog along the walls to improve themselves for a healthier lifestyle. You can see peoples holding hands at night admiring the stars, watching, and listening to the water crashing along the walls.Divers use It as one of the perfect spots for entering the water calmly and getting a closer look at the marine life. For me it stimulates my senses as well as many people on the island of Okinawa. My Location By unmanning My favorite location would have to be the Seawall in Sundae Okinawa, Japan. Investment and consumption decreased during the 2007 and 2009 recession. Government expenditure can increase Aggregate demand because it increases liquidity in the market. The government may operate below full employment when job seekers are more than available job hence end up accepting low wages. The multiplier can have a negative effect when people lose jobs as a result of government cut spending. This causes initial decrease in national income. The relationship between marginal propensities and multiplier is that an increase in MPC leads to an increase in multiplier. Similarly, increase in MPS causes a decrease in the multiplier (Farmer, 2008). 2. Fiscal Policy                9/11 attack led to decrease in aggregate demand, in United States. An example of a sector that was hit hard is entertainment and travel sectors. It also led to decrease in personal consumption. The attack caused an increase in equilibrium price levels. This is because there is an inverse relationship between Aggregate demand and equilibrium price levels.An Expansionary fiscal policy and Contractionary fiscal policy is used to increase aggregate demand. Expansionary fiscal policy is a policy used during the recession to increase AD by increasing government spending or decreasing taxes. Contractionary fiscal policy is used during inflation in order to decrease AD by decreasing government spending or increasing taxes (Farmer, 2008). After September 11’s attack, the government increased expenditure in different sectors such as national defense. 3. Money and Banking                Factors that led to the mortgage default crisis is much borrowings and flawed financial modeling majorly based on an assumption that prices of homes only go up, greed and fraud. Mortgage defaults affected lending banks in that their loans were not repaid leading to huge losses. In many cases, they got real estate that was valued far below what mortgage was when borrowers had a note. Default of bonds income backed by mortgage loans was interrupted banks were left with unwanted real estate (Friedman, 2010). Securitization is pooling different types of contractual debt. TARP is a program formed by the government of US to buy assets and equity from institutions that offer financial services in order to strengthen the financial sector. TARP opened a window of opportunity for banks to pay their own debt and acquire other businesses instead of lend money to private sectors. The Federal Reserve injected funds into the credit markets in order to help them lend again. It also reduced the target federal funds rate. Major provisions in the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act include Office of Insurance which creates Federal Insurance Office that monitors aspects of the insurance industry and Consumer Protections that creates Consumer Financial Protection Agency which protects Americans from unfair financial products and services. 4. Monetary Policy and the Federal Reserve                The Federal Reserve System refers to the central banking system of United States. Fed was launched in response to a series of financial panics. Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta covers the states of Alabama, Georgia and Florida, 74 counties in Tennessee, 38 parishes of Louisiana, and 43 counties of Mississippi. William H. Rogers, Jr is the current Chairman of this Fed. This fed should remain politically independent because its rate is determined by market and is not explicitly determined by the Fed. The target for federal funds is adjusted by 0.25% or 0.50% at any given time. Fed give liquidity to banks to enable them gives credit in times of recession. Federal Open Market Committee is a committee in Federal Reserve System that is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the country’s open market operations. Fed should decrease their rates to help spur the economy of US. This is expansionary monetary policy (Axilrod, 2011). 5. Free Trade                I support free trade and the NAFTA. They are based on comparative advantage. Countries produce what they can export cheaply. US exports goods like corn and meat to Mexico. Some of goods imported into USA include snacks and processed fruits. However, despite the having the benefit of increasing growth and collaboration between countries, free trade has the cost of dumping goods into the country and destroying infant industries. Free trade should be restricted on some goods like natural resources. 6. Foreign Exchange                US dollar is currently losing value against the euro. This is because the European Union is finding solution to Euro crisis. Dollars are supplied by the Central Bank of USA. A dollar loses value when its demand goes down. For example, whenever US citizens buy products from Germany, the demand for Euro goes up against the Dollar. A falling US Dollar increases ones travel expenses. This is because has to use more dollars to buy a foreign currencies which are expensive. However, a cheap dollar is bad for the US economy because it discourages exportation. A free floating exchange rate refers to a monetary system whose exchange rates are free to move due to forces of the market without intervention by the government (Friedman, 2010). What's a Good SAT Score for Your College SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips You’ve thought about your dream colleges and are wondering what SAT score will get you accepted. While there is not one number that will guarantee you a spot in the freshmen class, there is a range that will give you the best chance of admission. What is it? I'll answer that and more in this article. Colleges’ SAT Score Range and What They Mean for You To figure out what score you should aim for, you should look at colleges’ SAT score range.The score range represents the scores that admitted students received.Typically, colleges provide you with scores from the most recent applicant pool. The Score Range will be given to you in one of two ways: 25th/75th percentile or average SAT.The 25th percentile SAT score means 25% of admitted freshmen scored at or below that number (or 75% of admits scored higher).The 75th percentile SAT score means 75% of admitted students scored at or below that number (or 25% of admits scored higher).The average SAT is simply the average of all admitted students’ SAT scores. The score ranges will help you understand what kind of score you need to be a competitive applicant to that university, since after looking at it, you'll know what SAT scores admitted students received.Before figuring out exactly what score you should aim for, you need to figure out what schools you hope to attend. Make a List of Target Schools If you haven't done so already, create a list of your dream colleges. This list should not include your safety schools.A safety school is a college that you're almost certain you can get into with the SAT score and GPA you have now. This list should include the more selective colleges that you hope to attend. You should exclude the safety schools because you want to plan your target SAT score for the schools with the highest admissions standards. If you meet or exceed the admissions standards for the more selective schools, you will almost certainly be admitted to your safety schools.Once you think you've identified those more selective colleges, draw a table with 3 columns with the following titles: School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score Fill in your target schools under school name as I did below: School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score UC Berkeley Yale University Under the 25th percentile or average SAT, you'll put either the 25th percentile or average SAT score for that school. As I said before, schools will only provide you with one or the other; whichever they give you, writethat number in the middle column. Under 75th percentile / target score, you put the school’s 75th percentile score (if they provide it). For schools that only give average SAT, you'll be calculating a unique target score. I'll explain how to calculate it later on in the article. How to Find the SAT Score Ranges Now that you have your list finding those schools’ SAT score ranges is very easy. Simply search â€Å"[College Name] average SAT† or â€Å"[College Name] SAT 25th/75th percentile† in Google.That will most likely lead you to what is known as the Freshman Admit Profile for your target school. If you are unable to find a Freshman Admit Profile for your school of choice, check out our database of college admission requirements. There you'll find the admissions criteria for almost every college in the country. Use the Command + F function on your keyboard to search for your target school. Here is a screenshot from Yale’s admission site: Yale provided the 25th/75th percentile SAT score for their admits on their admissions website.To figure out the 25th percentile composite SAT score if you took the SAT or are taking it this fall, simply add the 3 lower numbers together (which each separately represent the 25th percentile SAT score for the section): 710 + 710 + 720 = 2140 To approximate the 25th percentile composite SAT score if you are taking the new SAT in spring 2016 (which is out of 1600), you need to first average the Verbal and Writing sections (since on the new SAT they are combined into one section out of 800): (710 + 720) / 2 = 715 And then add that number to the 25th percentile SAT score for Math: 715 + 710 = 1425, rounds to 1430 (the SAT is scored in units of 10) Do the same math with the higher numbers (75th percentile score) to figure out the composite 75th percentile SAT score. NOTE: some schools may call it the middle 50% scores, but the 2 numbers they provide are the 25th and 75th percentile scores. Some schools call it the middle 50% since the scores between the 25th and 75th percentile represent the middle 50% of SAT scores of admitted freshmen. Add this new information that you found (the 25th percentile composite SAT score) to your chart. (NOTE: I have completed this for a student taking the new SAT in Spring 2016 forward): School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score UC Berkeley Yale University 1430 1590 While some schools provide you with the 25th/75th percentile, other schools will provide you with only one number, the average SAT score for admitted freshmen (which UC Berkeley’s does in their Freshman Admit Profile below): As I said before, this is simply the average of all of the SAT scores for admitted freshmen. Since it is an average, you can't know exactly how many students scored above and below it, but presumably about 50% scored above and 50% scored below. If you took or are taking the SAT this fall, use the Math, Critical Reading, and Writing scores. Simply add them together to figure out the average composite SAT score. 686 + 710 + 698 = 2094, rounds to 2090 (as I noted before, the SAT is scored in units of 10) If you are taking the SAT in spring 2016 or later, use the Math score as is and then average the Critical Reading and Writing scores together (since on the new SAT they are combined into one section out of 800): (686 + 698) / 2 = 692 710 + 692 = 1402, rounds to 1400 Knowing this information, we'll writeit in the column for 25th Percentile or Average SAT, leave the 75th Percentile / Target Score blank for now for colleges that only provide Average SAT. I will explain what to fill in later on: School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score UC Berkeley 1400 Yale University 1430 1590 How to Calculate Target Score For schools that provide the 75th percentile, you should aim for a score at or above the 75th percentile. (That is why I had you list the 75th percentile in the same column as target score. The 75th percentile is your target score!) For those schools that just give you an average composite SAT (such as UC Berkeley), I would aim for a score 100 points above that score for the new SAT. For the old SAT, you will need to aim even higher (about 150 points above the average) since there are 3 sections instead of 2. For the best shot of admission to UC Berkeley if you are taking the new SAT in 2016, I would aim for 1500 out of 1600. If you took or are taking the current SAT, I would aim for 2240. You should fill in that number (the average SAT plus 100 points for the new SAT or the average SAT plus 150 points for the old SAT) to your chart under 75th percentile / Target score: School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score UC Berkeley 1400 1500 Yale University 1430 1590 You may ask why you can’t aim for a lower score, closer to the 25th percentile or the average score. After all, a lot ofstudents are accepted with those scores. In writing this article, I'm assuming that you are a typical applicant and not a special applicant.Special applicants such as athletes, legacies, child of significant donors, or a unique talent (such as world-class opera singers or famous actors) are typically admitted with lower scores (25th percentile score). If you are not in that category, you'll want a higher SAT score to havethe best chance of being accepted.The higher your score, the better your chance of admission.Check out Brown University’s breakdown of admission below: If you look at the highest score (800), 22.8% of applicants who scored an 800 in Critical Reading were accepted to Brown, which is significantly higher than the overall Brown admissions rate 8.7%. You can see that as your score begins to decline (you get between 750 and 790 in Critical Reading) your chances of being accepted drop by 5.7% from 22.8% to 15.1%.The same principle holds true across all sections and the composite (which they did not provide data on). The lesson to take away from this data is the higher your score, the better your chance of being accepted.As you see from my chart above, the two â€Å"Target Scores† vary by 90points, so which should you aim for?Aim for the highest target score on your list. If you reach the highest target score, you'll have the best chance of admission at all of the universities on your list. If you got a 1590 and applied to Yale and UC Berkeley, you would have a great chance of being accepted to both.However, if you got a 1500 and applied to Yale, you would now fall short of the 75th percentile score and be in the middle 50% of admits scores. You still could be admitted, but your chances are not quite as good. Hyphenating Phrases Hyphenating Phrases Hyphenating Phrases By Mark Nichol When should phrases of more than two words be hyphenated, and when should the constituent words stand on their own? The following sentences, and the discussions and revisions that follow each, illustrate the rules pertaining to hyphenation of phrases. 1. The researchers highlighted the follow the herd mentality the students exhibited. Because the phrase â€Å"follow the herd† constitutes one idea modifying the word mentality- and precedes the noun- the phrase should be hyphenated: â€Å"The researchers highlighted the follow-the-herd mentality the students exhibited.† (In the following sentence, â€Å"follow the herd† does not modify anything- it’s simply a verb phrase- so hyphens are not called for: â€Å"The students appeared to follow the herd in their everyday behavior.†) 2. The committee thoroughly reviewed the potential conflicts-of-interest before making a decision. Here, a phrase is hyphenated unnecessarily. â€Å"Conflicts of interest† is simply a noun phrase; it does not collectively modify anything, so no linking of the words is necessary: â€Å"The committee thoroughly reviewed the potential conflicts of interest before making a decision.† (If the phrase modified, and preceded, a noun- with a slight change to singular form for the first word- hyphenation would be correct, as in, â€Å"The conflict-of-interest implications are troublesome.†) 3. The agency’s structure violates the constitutional separation of powers doctrine. Here, a noun phrase in the â€Å"(blank) of (blank)† form serves to modify a noun, thus transforming to a phrasal adjective. Because the three words combine to form an idea and precede the noun they refer to, they should be hyphenated: â€Å"The agency’s structure violates the constitutional separation-of-powers doctrine.† (Constitutional modifies but is not part of the modifying phrase, so it is not attached.) 4. Her manager was none-too-pleased to see her arriving late for the second time in one week. This idiomatic phrase represents a single idea, but because it does not immediately precede the noun it applies to, hyphenation is not appropriate: â€Å"Her manager was none too pleased to see her arriving late for the second time in one week.† (However, it should be hyphenated in a sentence such as â€Å"Her none-too-pleased manager watched her arrive late for the second time in one week,† because the phrase â€Å"none too pleased† precedes the noun it modifies.) 5. We apparently will be informed on a need to know basis. Here, â€Å"need to know,† which, if it were to stand alone (as in â€Å"You don’t need to know†), would not require hyphens, merits them because the words together describe the type of basis in question, so the phrase serves as a phrasal adjective: â€Å"We apparently will be informed on a need-to-know basis.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Indigenous People and the Right to Self Determination - Essay Example The descendants of these indigenous people live in different parts of the world especially in the arctic and southern part of the pacific. This is according to those individuals that came to reside in countries earlier during which time people encompassing diversified cultures or even diversified ethnic origins arrived. Indigenous people include some Americans, the Aleutians and Inuit who reside in circumpolar region, northern Europe’s Saami, Australia’s Torres Strait Islanders and Aborigines as well as New Zealand’s Maori. As such, they have a history of unique characteristics retention and as such, these characteristics are by far differentiated when compared to those of other population segments (Ivison, Patton, & Sanders 2000). The U.N once asserted that, it is the identification of the indigenous people that can be regarded fruitful but not concentrating on trying to establish their definition. As such, the U.N based this on the criterion of self identificat ion, which is the most fundamental approach underlain in the documents that spell out the rights of a human (Shaw 2003). Therefore, there are several rights which are stipulated to protect them (Shaw 2003). Such a right is the right to self determination. Self determination can be described as a principle entailed in the law applying internationally whereby, it spell out the right to choose the political status of the entire world as well as the sovereignty. During the making of the choice, there should be no any form of manipulation in the form of external compulsions and interference (Suseno, Tri & Komnas HAM (Indonesia) 2006). The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of the indigenous people and thereby establishing ways in which these individuals can enforce their self determination rights. To understand the right to self determination of the indigenous people, it is better to look at the case between the Lubicon Lake Band and Canada whereby the communication which was submitted by Bernard Ominayak, who at that time was the chief of Lubicon Lake Band resulted to a decision being made by the committee handling the case (Suseno., Tri & Komnas HAM (Indonesia) 2006).
